By photographing deserted spaces, I investigate human transiency. For example, when we abandon what we fabricate, how long does the essence prevail? Light and shadow ceaselessly dwell in these spaces; in time, defining their existence beyond the parameters of their own walls. The nature of black and white film photography inspires a methodical intentionality, imploring the photographer to act slowly, consciously, and poignantly; it is a deliberate practice that is frequently lost in the vast reproducibility and often-excessive haste of the digital world.

Alyson Belcher's work combines pinhole photography with improvisational performance. She investigates the relationship between movement and stillness by photographing the human body using a handmade pinhole camera and long exposure times. The resulting photographs often reveal what lies beneath the surface of the skin - stories and memories than may have been held in the body over time, or perhaps are emerging for the first time. Her recent photographs include an ongoing series of self-portraits as well as collaborations with dancers and movement artists. Alyson's work has been exhibited in galleries from New York to Taiwan .Recent publications include Le Stenope: de la Photographie sans Objectif (Photo Poche Series, 2007) and The Elements of Photography: Understanding and Creating Sophisticated Images (Focal Press, 2008). She received her M.F.A. from San Francisco State University and is full-time faculty at the Academy of Art University.Alyson is represented in San Francisco by the Robert Tat Gallery .To see more of Alyson's photographs, visit the gallery or go to www.alysonbelcher.com

Jaq Chartier's paintings explore scientific methods through experimentation with paint and process. All of her works are "tests" to discover something about materials and what they do. Inspired in part by images of DNA gel electrophoresis, Chartier investigates the migration of various stains through layers of paint and acrylic gels.

"Photography, in its purest form, is the ultimate representational art. You see something, you capture its photo, and you portray what you see. What I strive for with my work is more, if you will, photo impressionism; I want to leave you with impressions more than perfect representations. I want to recreate the feeling of walking through the busy streets of Manhattan, stimuli jumping at your senses from every direction. I want you to notice the beautiful details of life in San Francisco that we tend to overlook in our hasty lives. And I challenge you to remember that there is often more to what you see than what is visible upon first glance- there is beauty to be found even in a federal prison. By compositing my images and arranging them in an unconventional pattern, I invite you to explore the photos in a new way. To look beyond the surface. The three dimensionality of the work is intended to startle your senses and force you beyond the image itself. The empty spaces represent the gaps in a person's perception; we so rarely are able to absorb the totality of what we see. And they also leave room for the viewer to fill with his or her own impressions; each piece is intended to be as interactive as it is expressive. My hope with my sculptural photography is to create an artistic experience that challenges your senses while Engaging in your mind"

"I make photographs because they are instantly digested as real. Despite the prevalence of digital manipulation, one accepts a photograph as concrete, that whatever captured on the film exists. The ostensible authenticity of photography, like the words "based on a true story" in a film, heightens the effect on the viewer. The staged, cinematic work of Jeff Wall and Anthony Goicolea has furthered my sensitivity to the value of creating scenarios. I am drawn to possibilities of dioramas, anatomical models and roadside dramas. My images celebrate photography's ability to create realities for the study of otherwise indescribable emotions"

Story telling through photography: the driving force behind James Scott Geras' passion.
"Anyone who sees this gothic, hauntingly religious, original artistry-which Geras began developing an eye for in his earlier years -will behold a story's snapshot: a story told only in the imagination of the viewer. While retaining a history through reflection of both light and shadows over aged beauty, the pictures in this book will nonetheless be cherished for their astonishing, sometimes breathtakingly smoky power; for the revelation of authentic textures and patterns show a depth beyond the two-dimensional image on the page."
Landscape photography is an art form which can transcend time and space. What can transform one person to a place they have previously visited, can just as easily transform another to a location they only dream of reaching. What stands out most in Geras' landscape art form is that it captures your attention; the play of light and shadows pulling you from one end of the picture to the other. - Michael James Grant- author of Black Flash & The Reunion
"Photography is as much about what is just beyond the picture frame as what is in its focus. When landscape unfolds itself in the camera lens, we find ourselves ushered to distant quiet places. But for all its nature, the true, invisible subject of pastoral imagery is time. James Scott Geras records the intersection between wilderness and humanity to reveal the coincidence between a specific moment and timelessness." -Laura Richard Janku - editor in chief of Artweek
"Moody and evocative nature scenes truly incorporate the notion of time and space as the representational foundation of reality." - Richard Pitnick - Black and White Magazine
"My work has been called a blend of fantasy and reality . . . and that all things are not as they seem. The inconsistency of the constant and the fact reality is always just beyond the boundary of imagination, has allowed my work to evolve through the years." -James Scott Geras

"I was born in 1976 in Fremont, Ohio. My romance with photography began at age eight when I received a Fischer Price camera as a gift.
I graduated from the Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology in Dayton, Ohio with an associate's degree in commercial photography. I was awarded with the Outstanding Portfolio Award for the class of 1997. In October of 1997, I moved to San Francisco on a Greyhound Bus with very few belongings. I began working as a freelance assistant and black & white printer for commercial photography studios. From 1998 to 2005 I was apprentice to Daniel Nicoletta. From 2002 to 2005 I also assisted Said Nuseibeh. I've exhibited my work in several group and solo exhibits including Geras Tousignant Gallery, Focus Gallery, Catherine Clark Gallery, Arlequin Garden Room Gallery, Toledo Ohio Art Museum, G&P Oz Caf?, Borders Books & Music, and Tea & Co., World Tea House.
I am fascinated by humanity's desire to understand and explain the reality of our physical world. Religion, Philosophy, Science and Art relentlessly offer evolving theories and paradigms of thought. I make a photograph without acknowledging the ephemeral states of space, gravity or time. conceive my images as though the objects spring from pure blackness, spontaneously and beautifully. I deify the subject and empathize with its timeless nature."

"Steven in a bed of flowers is a photograph from my upcoming thesis project "He Opened Up Somewhere Along the Eastern Shore.' This project looks at male Marines who have returned from war and asks questions about their relationship to normative culture. This photograph interests me for its ability to situate the Marine body in a landscape that is surprising for not only it's gender associations but also for it's exposure of the very small index of ways in which the Marine has been historically photographed and allowed to be presented in popular culture."

"I have always been drawn to lives that border on mystery. My first instinct is to beg for permission to enter worlds least familiar to me, reveling in the foreign experiences. I love the challenge of the unexpected, and work best in the medium of documentary photography. Whereas many photographers are compelled to stage their models, my senses are sharpened by the spontaneous experiences around me.
Ambiguous Times explores personal isolation in the American city. The images play with the urban landscape as a theater in which characters come and go. Although a city can be characterized as a lonely place, it is more importantly, grounds for potential.
In reaction to my career as a photojournalist, using the latest digital equipment and technology, I took to the streets with a plastic camera and black and white film. This method allowed me to be spontaneous and unobstructed in my photography. I had the luxury of reacting to interesting situations quickly, rarely even looking through the viewfinder. No deadlines loomed and I was free to experiment, fail and find my vision. My reward was making images cued by instinct, caring little about what was captured on the film. This exercise brought me back to why I was drawn to photography: an opportunity to be and work in the moment."

"I am using the language of painting to communicate ideas about language itself. In doing this, I am also exploring themes of expansion and contraction, looking and the desire for perfect forms, and cosmological and phenomenological forces. In creating meaning between disparate abstract forms, I cull from a visual vocabulary rooted in the imaginary, the real and the symbolic. Most often my visual cues come from the body and the landscape. My recent works draw from a wide range of influences; I am intrigued by the binarism inherent in the poetry of Pablo Neruda, recent scientific advancements into outer space, and the tenets of Minimalist painting." |

"The narrative power of the photograph captured my imagination at an early age and continues to compel me to create allegorical images. I start with the emotions I want to evoke from my audience and construct the scene to meet my goal. While photographs can be powerful as a mass produced item, I find they can also be precious as unique objects, each piece imbued with the artifacts from the artist's hand."

Elyse Mallouk earned her BA from Boston College, and is simultaneously pursuing an MFA and an MA in Visual Criticism at California College of the Arts. Working in video, animation, light projection, installation, and painting, she investigates the desire to freeze life in full bloom, to hold onto things in their most scintillating state.
"In Rapture (2008), an immersive animated light installation, gems fly upward in a vertiginous environment that surrounds the viewer. Gemstones are rocks that are culled from the ground and polished, imbued with human time, energy, and symbolic meaning. The piece explores the desire to make something natural and rough into something polished and precious, in the attraction to things we perceive as eternal, and in the reasons these things are valuable to us. The paintings generated out of the installation are physical attempts to grasp the precious objects as they ascend."

"Remnants of Sculpture (bridge the gap) A" is part of a series of labor-intensive drawings of industrial castoffs. These mass produced (often overlooked) materials have a generic sense of history; they do not reference a specific time, place or function. For me, the process of drawing is a method of organization - lines and forms are spatially below, above, under or over.
Motivation for this method of working is a reaction to the chaos of life. Yet, despite my attempt to control piles of disorderly remnants, my drawings become unconsciously complicated by beauty. In this way, a small gesture exists in a continuum between process and aesthetics."

"I studied photography at Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California. In 1993, after completing my studies, I returned to Costa Rica and worked in advertising photography for four years. I felt that I had to continue developing my fashion portfolio so I moved back to Los Angeles in 1998.
At the time, Los Angeles was starting to become an important area for fashion design. It was a great experience since I met and worked with various talented designers, such as Nikolaki and Louis Verdad, whose work is highly recognized and respected within the US fashion industry. I also had the opportunity to collaborate in photographic projects with the Coalition of Los Angeles Designers (C.L.A.D.) and Gen Art L.A.
I returned to Costa Rica in 2002, where I have been creating interesting photography projects, working in collaboration with Costa Rican fashion designers and artists."

"My paintings are time and process-based works that combine elements of layering, systems of accrual and color. By allowing and encouraging the accrual of paint to act in a three dimensional manner, the material begins to take on its own sculptural shape. These layers of paint function as a way to mark the passage of time, as well as the material's own accumulation.
I select color based on personal systems often inspired by the text from a book that I am reading, a telephone call home to Saskatchewan, or the colors of clothing worn by people who visit my studio throughout that day. Each piece is a concentration of the many "paintings." These paintings are not executed in the traditional manner of finished artworks, but rather "paintings" as a "gerund", a series of consecutively painted actions. In actuality each work is a painting, on a painting, on a painting, concealing as much as it reveals."

He studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art for two years, transferred to the University of Maryland, and graduated in 2000 with a degree in anthropology. He has since been working as a painter and a sculptor, showing mainly in the DC-Baltimore area. In 2004 he finished his first public art project, nine bronze 'call box' sculptures for the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Washington, DC.
"I love paintings with movement, tension, and delicately strained balance. I have always been drawn to Gericault's Raft of the Medusa because of its grand drama, theatrical effects, heroic struggle, and its sheer size and audacity. My own painting, Lost at Sea, nods to Gericault and to others who painted beautiful dramas at sea and on land. In Lost at Sea, a man unwisely stands in the unstable boat and begins to fall. Those around him reach out to help him -- or brace themselves against his fall. Others retreat into their own trances: an older man in the stern looks backward, as if to the past; a young mother in the bow looks forward, blindly hoping for a better future. A lone rower fights the bigger problem of the sea. Lost at Sea does not depict an actual, historic event; in a metaphorical sense, however, we have all been lost at sea, helplessly adrift in an endless present."

"My current photographic work, a continuation and expansion of my family work, explores the liminal state of adolescence and the complexity of that transitional time. My subject is not youth culture or the teenager as much as it is the psychological and emotional experience that is inherent during this period of life. Themes of identity and intimacy, separation and sexuality, vulnerability and confidence emerge as traces of the intensity of this time. This image, "Cave," illustrates that possibility and the seeming blackness of the unknown."

"This print was created for a portfolio called "Nueve Mujeres" at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. The piece I created is my attempt to create an imaginary event in a believable world. I drew a series of Serrano chilis and whirled them together as if they were a storm sweeping through the streets of San Francisco. If it really happened I think there would be two reactions: in the first, people would be running in fear. In the second, women who knew how to cook would be out in the streets with big baskets and plastic buckets collecting the chilis. I see this as a metaphor for life itself, each new thing bringing opportunity to those who know how to use it."

Luis Solari (1908-84) was born in Uruguay. The eminent art historian, Edward J. Sullivan, called him "Another of Uruguay's greatest artists." He emerged as an important national and international figure with his own brand of Magic Realism as early as the 1940's.
His work included reference to myths, folklore, oral traditions and popular culture. It is at once metaphorical and evocative. In the 1960's he began to experiment with metal engraving using innovative techniques, especially the superimposition of plates and spontaneous elements.
His muted palate evokes an unearthly atmosphere and invites the viewer into a reverie about the mystery of things. His work often poses the questions about the nature of perceived reality as opposed to a dream state. He is also a sharp critic of the social order.

"Abstraction is my way to describe what I cannot see physically, what is beyond the tangible. I take an idea and remove all that is familiar to me, seeking the true essence, what's left is something that has a much deeper grasp of reality.
My paintings and bronze sculptures journal my emotional response to passages and experiences in my life. When I resonate with an abstract idea, I use the most basic elements of art to capture it- lines and boundaries of color.
I am drawn to the power and economy of lines as signifiers. Lines unite, separate, represent ideas, describe paths, provoke emotion, and create language. Colors directly colonize the subconscious.
My creative process consists of adding and eliminating. The gradual building up of layers of color and texture, creates depth and translucency."

"With my work I blend my interest in sub-cultural and pop-related subjects with the traditional motifs of the ceramic medium. Frequently you may find references to underground comix, fantasy, and marginalized imagery being mixed with more conventional ceramic operations such as the vessel and decorative patterning. I feel that it's important that there's no bias in either direction with these juxtapositions, the work should appeal to both formal notions of beauty and personal idiosyncrasy."

"I have a fascination with teapots, and love the idea that this man-made vessel has an immense importance to various cultures for its ceremonial purposes yet it can be treasured and enjoyed by a child engaged in a magical, make-believe tea party. I enjoy the idea of transforming a classic, traditional vessel such as the teapot into artwork. The thought that my teapots can make a statement by causing a dramatic gesture in someone's home brings great pleasure. I'm very much inspired by lines, geometric shapes, and the continuous movement of the eye. I often focus on a particular shape, which becomes a reoccurring theme or subject throughout my work, and feel that the negative space around the piece is just as important as the overall shape.
Ironically the words foot, belly, shoulder, neck, and lip are used to describe parts of a ceramic wheel thrown vessel. I like to toy with the idea of the vessel as a symbol for the human individual. The lid serves as a safety feature to protect one from having others take a peek inside."

"I love recalling collective memories of peaceful horizons, creating environments with open, expansive, clear horizons‚ an old tree, a vista of pastureland, and the distant billowing clouds of my lazy youth.
Trees order the life on Earth, Daniel Tousignant compellingly declares that leaf-heavy branches in summer reflect the beauty and vulnerability of all living things. From an orderly thicket of green symmetry, one sees balance and proportion not yielding to nature's randomness. Next and contrarily, one observes boughs refusing to hide a sunset, while persuading the viewer to reach back for a concealed memory from a simple and effortless time. His paintings are layered; a kind of soft flowing across every inch of the surface..
Mr. Tousignant has attended the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Chicago Art Institute, Central School of Art in London, and the highly respected Royal Academy in London, England.
Looking at the work of San Francisco artist and gallery owner Daniel Tousignant is like staring at a freeze frame of the best dream you've ever had, and the effect is a sudden wash of chest-clutching happiness. The beauty evoked by his landscape is so intense that it elevates them into the realm of abstraction, even though on the surface they're utterly representative. There is some living depth, all the more fascination for its hiddenness, breathing behind every leafy branch. The artist says that trees reflect the beauty and vulnerability of all living things. Maybe this vulnerability is what we see just under the surface of his canvasses, and what elicits such a visceral reaction to his work."

"Through elaborate suites of etchings, intricate ink drawings, and handcrafted artists books, I seek to examine overarching themes of impermanence as embodied by both built and natural landscapes. Change comes in all forms and at all times, gently and with force, from within and from without. Man and nature alike take their effect upon each other, as well as on themselves. Impermanence is inescapable and evidenced in both drawn out history and everyday occurrence, yet is often best exposed through its dramatically destructive forces. My work is born out of engagement with my native environment, San Francisco, as well as all other landscapes I encounter and inhabit, and is built upon intensive research and amassing of histories. At its core is the methodical nature of its creation; meticulous mark making, focused labor, and perfected process bring the work into being. Craft and tradition are imperative. When the single image is not powerful enough, the Succession of images come into play, and when images alone are not enough, written word is introduced, creating a communion between text and image; allowing each to pick up where the other leaves off. Ultimately each element of my work is an essential source of one single unified entity with no disconnect between process and product, nor inspiration and actualization."

"What I Search for is quiet. At the intersection of quiet, color, and geometry is where I make these photographs. This is my meditation. My response to our modern world. The end results are crisp elegant photographs that please me, and I hope you as well.

"My photography is about my lifelong obsession with abstract painting. It is about line, color, texture, form and composition. I am a child of modernism. I embrace the clean lines, the simplicity and the minimalism. I bask in abstraction and clarity of form."
