More than 2 Million Californians Needing Mental Health Care

A November 2011 report from the UCLA Center for Healthcare Services found that while more than 8% of Californians are suffering from a serious level of psychological distress only a small minority are receiving adequate care.

Hear Access Institute Executive Director Bart Magee, Ph.D. discuss this crisis on KQED radio's Forum with Michael Krasny.

Access Institute continues to lead the fight for accessible and affordable mental health care for all.

Providing a mental health safety net in San Francisco

We deliver affordable psychological services —serving as a mental health safety net for those without adequate insurance or the means to afford high-quality, longer-term treatment.

Our programs meet our community’s need for comprehensive psychological care, while providing rigorous training to clinicians seeking licensure in a mental health discipline.

Access Institute is an independent non-profit funded by individuals and foundations who believe that psychological services should be available to everyone.

Providing a mental health "safety net"

Neither county funded clinics nor health insurance plans offer or cover adequate mental health services. Access Institute provides an essential safety net of mental health services and serves a growing need for preventive psychological care.

  • Our programs have grown substantially in the past five years. Our staff and 20 intern/therapists provide affordable therapy, assessment and medication services to over 175 individuals, families, children and seniors.
  • Over 750 hours of therapy, medication consultation and neuropsychological testing services are provided every month.
  • Benefits to patients: decreased psychiatric symptoms, increased mental stabilization, improved quality of life, and improved ability to function in society.
  • Benefits to society: decreased use of primary health services, decreased substance, hospitalizations and suicides.
  • We collaborate with the Bayview Hunter' s Point Adult Day Health Center to serve the psychological needs of the elderly in Bayview’s multi-ethnic neighborhood.
  • We partner with the San Francisco Unified School district to provide therapy for children, consultation for families and training for staff at Grattan and Hillcrest elementary schools.

Meeting our community’s mental health needs

Access Institute offers essential clinical services for individuals and families in need of mental health support and psychological care.  We serve:

  • Men and women— who have lost jobs, struggle to subsist in the current economic environment and need support and direction as they strain to raise and provide for their children.
  • Elderly people, who are often socially isolated, have limited financial or health care resources, and need care to help with psychological problems associated with aging, such as depression and dementia.
  • Children and adolescents, whose day-to-day lives are overburdened with stress and may have suffered trauma and neglect and need the understanding and hope that therapy can provide.
  • Youth in transition to adulthood, including students, itinerant youth, former foster youth and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) youth struggling to find self-acceptance and a place in the world where they can thrive.

Access Institute interns provide care for these patients and others like them.  When they graduate, our interns become the next generation of psychologists and therapists with a special interest in helping those who have nowhere else to turn. They join others who, along with Access Institute, believe that mental health services should be available to everyone.
