Text Box: Photo by Peter Ross As Ken Corbett begins his new book, Boyhoods: Rethinking Masculinities, he writes, "Masculinity is a complex pattern. Boyhood is chaotic dynamism", and vividly sets the stage for a reworking of the psychoanalytic theory of male development.  In his study, Dr. Corbett ardently takes on the chaotic complexity that is boyhood development.  Astutely, and with his characteristic playfulness, he reexamines the theories, the cultural narratives and the bodily experiences of masculinity with an eye toward appreciating the variability and multiplicity of male development.

Just as Dr. Corbett invites us to rethink our conceptions of gender and masculinity, Access Institute's in-school therapy program asks us to rethink some of the cultural assumptions about psychotherapy, as the practice takes on new forms and meanings within the multifaceted social/cultural context of the public elementary school.

We invite you to a special evening at Grattan Elementary school.  Dr. Corbett will discuss his clinical research and reflect on how boys develop. He will also hear and discuss case material presented by Access Institute intern therapists providing therapy at two San Francisco elementary schools.  The presentation will provide a unique opportunity for participants to think though questions about the nature of gender, psychology and development, how boys' developmental challenges are traversed at school, and how therapists can find their way though it all and provide assistance.

Ken Corbett, Ph.D. is assistant clinical professor in the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.  He is a psychoanalyst in private practice with children and adults.

Access Institute's in-school program provides play therapy and consultation to families and staff at Hillcrest and Grattan Elementary Schools in San Francisco.  The program employs a collaborative, team-based model with an emphasis on the whole child and the goal of facilitating healthy development and psychological well being.
