LIVE AUCTION 2005

MIGUEL OSUNA
el avance de la noche
oil on canvas
, 12" x 96"
Represented by Baxter Chang Patri Fine Art
Retail value $3850
Starting bid TBD
Blurring the lines between representation and abstraction, Osuna’s landscapes are fragmented snapshots of California. His preoccupation with the effects of light, color, surface, and perspective result in mysterious impressions, momentary glimpses or suggestions of familiar Californian vistas, as though they are photographs shot from the viewpoint of a moving vehicle.
Osuna’s re-presenting of familiar vistas and landscapes of California provoke the viewers to reevaluate, and in many ways rediscover their ideas, experiences (and for some nostalgic memories) of living in and visiting this "golden" state.
From Baxter Chang Patri press release, may 2005

EMILY PAYNE
Arch of Triumph
Mixed media sculptural painting, 68"x28"
Represented by Cecile Moochnek Gallery
Retail value $1850
Starting bid $800
Book covers, though two dimensional, lend themselves well to sculptural form. One day, someone decided these books had had their time and needed to be retired. In the context of my work, it is the story of these books’ travels and where they have come from that captures my attention, rather than their content.

As I sift through the books, themes start to appear: journeys on ocean liners, animal tales, fathers and sons, travel logs, stories of love and war. A stack of blue books becomes a piece on the ocean and sky and all the travelers they carry. Another stack of faded, well used covers reminds me of a painting of bathers by the sea and a piece on ocean, sand, sun drenched clothes, skin and late afternoon light emerges. In my studio, I will give these books a new life. I will recycle them and use their parts, disassembling them, ending their role as containers for words, now they are objects in cloth, joining other covers and taking their original shape again as part of a sea of material. Now their histories merge and while their stories can not be read, they can be seen as part of a new constellation of colors. Emily Payne
