Job title: Development Director (Full time position)
Access Institute for Psychological Services is a community-based mental health care nonprofit based in San Francisco that delivers comprehensive and affordable mental health care to those with the greatest need and the least access. For over 17 years, the organization has made high-quality psychological services available to individuals and families who lack adequate insurance and the financial means to afford care. Every year over 13,000 hours of services are provided to more than 700 people of all ages. Access Institute’s clinical training programs (Doctoral Psychology Internship and Post-graduate Fellowship) train the next generation of mental health professionals in contemporary psychodynamic treatment approaches that integrate socio-cultural perspectives and instill ethics of community service. Access Institute provides mental health care at its Hayes Valley clinic and at community locations, including seven public elementary schools and an adult day health center in Bayview Hunter’s Point.
Position Overview: Access Institute seeks a dynamic and passionate professional to join its leadership team as Director of Development and lead its growing fund and resource development program. The right candidate is someone who shares a passion for making mental health care available to all. The ideal candidate is a highly-organized, strategic thinker, who has excellent leadership and communication skills and has a proven track record at building relationships and communities. The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and works in collaboration with him, the Board of Directors, fundraising committees of the board, and the Directors of clinical programs to provide leadership and support to all fund development activities of the organization. The Director of Development is supported by and supervises the work of the Development Manager.
Currently, Access Institute has a budget of $2 million, two-thirds of which is raised from a combination of foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual gifts. Access Institute is poised to grow significantly in the next 5 years. The Director of Development will play a key role in actively collaborating with leadership to realize this growth.

Essential job functions:
- Development Strategy: Provide strategic leadership for the organization’s development efforts. Set effective goals, develop key strategies and lead implementation of all campaigns, outreach efforts and related activities.
- Major Gifts: Work with board and Executive Director to implement the major gifts program with special attention to major donor relations (outreach, engagement, stewardship).
- Team leader: Manage a small team of development professionals and volunteers including a Development Associate and Development Intern. Provide leadership for volunteers including board development committees, event planning committees and event host committees.
- Event Planning: Provide leadership and organization for special events, including donor cultivation events and the annual gala "Spectrum". Provide leadership for board participation in the Spectrum gala and other donor events.
- Grants Management: Direct activities related to preparing, writing and submitting letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports and proposals for event sponsorship to foundations, corporations, and other sources.
- Other Related Fundraising Activities: Provide leadership and management of the year end appeal, spring appeal, prospect research and database management.
- Media and Communications: Direct Access Institute’s outreach and community relations strategy. Lead the development of content and manage Access Institute’s communications through multiple media channels.
Required qualifications:
- BA or BS degree
- A minimum of five years of professional fund development or related experience.
- Commitment to Access Institute’s mission and to the cause of affordable, accessible mental health care.
- Excellent writing, organizational and analytical skills. Working knowledge of best practice fundraising strategies and procedures.
- Proven team building and leadership skills. Ability to motivate diverse groups of individuals and inspire them to reach their goals.
- Strategic, organized and flexible.
- Ability to manage multiple projects/deadlines and flexibly respond to new circumstances.
- Strong interpersonal skills and confidence to comfortably interact with high net worth individuals and foundation representatives.
- Strong attention to detail. Computer experience with Microsoft Office and donor database software.
